EN 124 divides manhole covers and drainage gratings into six classes as follows: A15, B125, C250, D400, E600, F900. The classification denotes the test load expressed in kN. For example D400 denotes that a product complies with test load of 400kN.
Location of the installation within the carriageway determines which classification of product is required and a typical highway cross section is illustrated below showing the location of some of these installation groups. A guide as to which class of manhole cover or gully top should be used is listed in brackets beside each group. It should be noted that the selection of the appropriate class is the responsibility of the designer. Where there is any doubt the higher class should be selected.
